London: Cavs Need Continued Development from Watford

The quarterback decision has been made, and the offensive package is just about in place. Now, according to Virginia coach Mike London, the continued development of sophomore David Watford is key.

"Now it's about making sure the decisions he makes; the accuracy with his throws," London said at the outset of the Cavaliers' practice on Tuesday at the McCue Center. "That becomes primary."

London announced during a teleconference Monday morning that Watford would be UVa's starting quarterback on August 31, when the Cavaliers host BYU at Scott Stadium. That season opener will mark Watford's first game appearance since November 26, 2011 against Virginia Tech -- and the redshirt sophomore's first career college start.

"We're going to need him to play a type of game that a quarterback that has a good arm, great feet, and a feel for the game is going to have to have," London said Tuesday. "So we're looking for him to do what he needs to do out there. And it starts with knowing the offense, and knowing the personnel that we have."

London also talked about an added dimension Watford's running ability brings to the UVa offense. While Watford's primary job on offense will be to get the ball to the Cavaliers' playmakers, London pointed out that his speed makes the quarterback a potential playmaker himself.

"When you look at him run, he's got to be one of the fastest players on the team, as well," London said. "So we'll try to utilize his arm, his legs, and particularly his brain. As far as what he needs to do, and when he needs to do it."
