Down to their last out in their Beltway Series with the Baltimore Orioles, the Washington Nationals turned to Ronnie Belliard. And he delivered.
Belliard hit a 2-run walk-off home run off George Sherrill in the bottom of the 12th to lift the Nationals to a 3-2 victory over the Orioles. He was 0-13 prior to that at bat.
The Nationals got out to the early lead when Aaron Boone grounded into a fielder's choice in the 1st to score recent call-up Roger Bernadina. Washington held on to that lead until the 7th, when Luke Scott hit his second home run in as many days, a solo shot that tied the game at 1.
The Orioles took a 2-1 lead in the top of the 12th when Adam Jones singled in Nick Markakis. But after Sherrill retired the first two batters of the bottom half of the 12th, he gave up a walk to Dmitri Young, and then the home run to Belliard. Sherrill took the loss to fall to 2-3 on the season.
The Nationals and Orioles ended up splitting their season series 3-3.
