Former Cavalier pitcher Michael Ballard was announced as the Texas Rangers' starting pitcher for Wednesday night's game against the Los Angeles Angels, but two hours before first pitch, the Rangers changed their minds. Ballard was pulled from the start in favor of Warner Madrigal, a relief pitcher.

Ballard was originally slated to start in place of the injured Vincente Padilla, but the Rangers' reason for pulling him is simple. If they added Ballard to the 25 man roster, they would be required to add him to their 40 man roster for the rest of the season, meaning that Ballard would become a permanent part of the big club come September. Instead, Texas chose to leave the southpaw in AA, and not rush his development.

The AA team in Frisco has not been bad for Ballard. He is 8-3 with a 3.97 ERA, and is 5-1 in his last six starts. He could still be called upon later in the season if the Rangers feel he has developed properly.
