American Legion Post 74 from Albemarle begins its quest to win a District 12 Conference baseball championship on Thursday night. After winning the regular season championship, Albemarle feels that they are playing their best baseball when it counts the most.
The team locked up the regular season title on Saturday, topping King George Post 89, 4-3. Post 74 finished up the regular season with a 15-3 conference record, 21-4 overall. Albemarle earns the right to host all of their playoff match ups due to their first place finish during the regular campaign.
Post 74 is made of up players from local high schools around the county, as well as several college players who reside in the area. The team feels that they have come a long way since the start of the season at the beginning of the summer.
"It's always tough when you blend a group of players from different schools together and finding that right mix," remarked assistant coach Jimmy Bibb. "Everybody can't play shortstop, everybody can't hit fourth. We have guys that hit fourth for their high schools maybe hitting ninth, but they're still an integral part of our team and I think that we'll be fine."
" We needed to mature a lot throughout the year and I think we have, " added catcher Patrick Collins, who earned the starting spot at Roanoke College this past season. "We have a lot of talent on this team and there's a lot of great players from these high schools, and it's been fun coming back from college and playing with these guys."
