When Al Groh and Pete Carroll take the field at Scott Stadium on August 30, it will not be the first time that the two have been on opposite sidelines. Both have been at their respective schools since 2001, but prior to that the two faced each other as members of NFL coaching staffs.

From 1993 to 1997, Groh was the linebackers coach for the Patriots, while Carroll worked with New England's AFC East rival, the New York Jets. In 1997, when Groh went to the Jets, Carroll went to the Patriots, taking their head coaching position. The two have never faced each other as head coaches of programs, meaning the season opener will serve as a first for both men.

Groh and Carroll have had very different experiences since 2001. Both have overall winning records, both overall and in their respective conferences, but Carroll has taken USC to new heights. Since that year, the Trojans are 76-14 overall, 53-9 in the PAC10, and have gone to a bowl game in all seven seasons. Six of those bowl games have been of the BCS nature, with the Trojans winning five of them, including two national titles.
