Four Former UVa. Rowers Win Medals in Beijing

Former University of Virginia rowers, representing three different countries, combined one gold, one silver, and two bronze medals Sunday at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Lindsay Shoop, a Charlottesville native and 2003 graduate of UVa., won the gold medal for the USA in the Women's Eight event. It was her Olympic debut.

Shoop and her seven teammates bested the team from the Netherlands, which included former Virginia rower Marlies Smulders. Smulders rowed for the Cavaliers for one year in 2000.

In the Women's Lightweight Double Sculls final, Melanie Kok, a 2007 alum of the Virginia rowing program, won bronze for Canada.

Also winning a medal was Wyatt Allen, a 2001 graduate of Virginia, won the bronze medal for the USA in the Men's Eight event.

In all, four former University of Virginia rowers won medals Sunday morning in Beijing.
