Virginia Shuts Out Richmond 16-0

September 6, 2008

The Virginia football team spoiled Mike London's return to Charlottesville with a 16-0 shutout win over his Richmond Spiders.

The Cavaliers were impressive on their opening drive, going 80 yards to set up Yannick Reyering with a 26 yard field goal. It was Reyering's first career field goal and gave the Cavaliers an early 3-0 lead. But that was the only time either team would get on the board in the first half.

Richmond had a chance to tie the game in the 3rd, but kicker Andrew Howard's field goal attempt was blocked by Matt Conrath. UVa took over at their own 25, but two plays later the Spiders got the ball back courtesy of a David Horton interception. Richmond was unable to capitalize though.

Virginia finally got its offense going again in the 4th. Mikell Simpson capped off a 54 yard drive with a 1 yard touchdown run, his second of the season. A couple minutes later, the Cavaliers put it away when Vic Hall intercepted an Eric Ward pass and returned it 60 yards for a touchdown.

Virginia improves to 1-1 on the season. The Cavaliers hit the road for the first time next week when they take on Connecticut. The Huskies are 2-0 after edging Temple in overtime today.
