Virginia Falls to Clemson on Senior Day

November 22, 2008

The Cavaliers were unable to send their seniors out with a win in their final home game, as they fell to Clemson 13-3.

The day did not get started well at all for Virginia. Quarterback Marc Verica threw an interception late in the first quarter, setting up the Clemson offense on UVa's 20 yard line. On the very next play from scrimmage, Quarterback Cullen Harper pitched the ball out to C.J. Spiller, who found a wide open Tyler Grisham for a touchdown. It would be the game's only touchdown though, giving Clemson a 7-0 lead.

At the end of the second quarter, Virginia turned the ball over again. This time Verica connected with Rashawn Jackson, but he fumbled the ball. Clemson recovered and would capitalize when Mark Buchholz connected on a 32 yard field goal.

On the ensuing drive, the Cavaliers marched 60 yards down the field, eventually setting up Robert Randolph with a 34 yard field goal attempt. He connected, making the score 10-3 Clemson at the half.

Virginia was unable to get any offense going in the second half though. Verica threw two more intereceptions in the fourth quarter, the last of which iced the game for Clemson. All together, the Cavaliers turned the ball over four times in the loss.

With the loss, Virginia is now eliminated from contention in the ACC Coastal division race. The Cavaliers will close out the regular season Saturday the 29th against rival Virginia Tech.
