The Charlottesville boys basketball team took the court for the first time since losing to Spotswood back on December 10 and came out strong. The Knights took on William Monroe in their Jefferson District opener and did not disappoint the home crowd, knocking off the Dragons, 74-62. Maurice Jackson led Charlottesville with 23 points. Terrence Briggs added 19 points, while Omari Minor chipped in 15.
While many other teams are well into their respective seasons, the Monticello boys took the court for their first contest of 2008-2009 Friday. The Mustangs hosted Orange tonight, but could not hold off the Hornets, who won in a nail-biter, 63-61.
Demetrius Johnson scored 24 points for Louisa, but it was not enough, as the Lions fell to Goochland on Friday night, 81-64. Damon Riddick added 18 points in the losing effort. Goochland's Mark Sampson led the Bulldogs with 21 points.
Albemarle returned to Commonwealth District action Friday, as the Patriots played host to Massaponax. Andre Roberts scored 20 points to lead the Pats past the Panthers, 58-41. Cameron Anderson pitched in 16 to help Albemarle's cause.
Girls action saw Charlottesville and William Monroe in a close battle. The Dragons held the lead with less than one minute to go, but Shalita Brown's turnaround jumper off the glass proved to be the game winner in a 48-45 Knights' victory. Shawnte Payne led all scorers with 22 points, with Brown adding 13 for Charlottesville in the win.
Orange traveled to Monticello on Friday, and came away with a big 66-40 win. The Hornets are now 1-1 in Jefferson District play.
