January 9th High School Hoops Wrap Up

District play continued on Friday for many area teams. The Western Albemarle and Monticello boys clashed in Crozet, and the Mustangs were able to hand the Warriors their first district loss. Monticello hung on down the stretch for a 66-65 win.

Charlottesville remained unbeaten in district play, topping Orange, 81-63. The loss marks the Hornets first district loss of the season, while the Knights improve to 10-2, 4-0 in the Jefferson.

William Monroe welcomed Fluvanna for a district meeting and earned the 75-50 win.

The STAB boys hosted FUMA, winning 62-53. The Saints honored Brett Goodloe prior to tip off, as Goodloe scored his 1,000th career point earlier this season on the road.

Albemarle played its second overtime game of the week, topping Brooke Point, 56-52. Adam Utz led the Patriots with 16 points, while Cameron Anderson added 15. Albemarle has now played four overtime periods in its last two games.

On the girls side, Western Albemarle made a late charge to hold off Monticello, taking the match up, 44-35. The Warriors remain close behind Charlottesville for the Jefferson District lead. The Knights stayed unbeaten on the season Friday, winning 50-44 at Orange.

Melanie Lamb scored 19 points as William Monroe traveled to Fluvanna and escaped with the 42-33 win. The Dragons improve to 4-1 in the Jefferson District, and are just a half game behind Charlottesville for first place in the standings.

Albemarle fell behind Brooke Point by ten after a quarter, but fought back to tie it at the half, and pulled away in the second half to clinch the 57-50 victory. Tamika Lewis led the Patriots with 25 points.
