Virginia Men Fall Short at Virginia Tech

January 10, 2009

A late rally was not enough for the Virginia men's basketball team, as the Cavaliers fell to Virginia Tech 78-75 in Blacksburg on Saturday.

Virginia trailed by 15 with under five minutes to go in the game, but then got a lift from Mustapha Farrakhan. He hit four three pointers in the final minutes of the game, the last of which got the Cavaliers within two. Then, down four with under 10 seconds left, Jamil Tucker hit a three pointer to make it a one point game. The Cavaliers then fouled A.D. Vassallo, who hit both free throws to put the Hokies back up by three. Virginia had one last chance to try and tie the game, but Sammy Zeglinski's desperation heave fell well short.

Vassallo led all scorers with 29 points on the day, while Sylven Landesberg paced the Cavaliers with 20. The loss drops UVa to 7-6 on the season, 1-1 in the ACC.

Virginia will return to John Paul Jones Arena for its home conference opener against #3 North Carolina on Thursday. Tip-off is set for 9 pm.
