The Western Albemarle boys basketball team is playing its best basketball and the Warriors showed that the road to the Jefferson District Title goes through them on Tuesday. Western outlasted Charlottesville, 67-65, on the Knights home court.
Western took a 13 point lead into the half, only to see it disappear. The Knights fought all the way back and took the 49-48 lead in the fourth quarter on a Kevin Leatherwood three pointer. The Warriors had more down the stretch, though, and clinched the victory when Leatherwood's game-winning three point attempt was off the mark at the buzzer.
Travis Washington led Western Albemarle with 24 points, while Christian Pierce added 18 and Dante Crawford chipped in 17. Leatherwood scored a game high 28 points for Charlottesville in the losing cause.
Despite the shift in the standings, there is still a lot of basketball left to be played. Both teams hold identical 4-1 district records, while the Warriors improved to 8-4 overall with the win. The Knights, meanwhile, fell to 10-3. These two teams will meet again in Crozet on February 6 in Crozet.
