The Western Albemarle boys basketball team had the chance to force a one game playoff with a win on Tuesday against Orange, but fell short, as the Hornets spoiled the Warriors changes with a 69-65 win. Quintin Hunter led the way for Orange with a game high 20 points, while D.J. Brown added 15. Travis Washington scored 18 for Western, which also got 16 points from Christian Pierce. The Warriors finish the regular season with a 9-3 district record and will be the number two seed in the district tournament.
With the Western loss, Charlottesville is your Jefferson District regular season champion. The Knights held a non-district match up tonight, topping Harrisonburg on the road, 81-79, in double overtime. Maurice Jackson had 33 points, while Kevin Leatherwood chipped in 19. The Knights receive a first round bye in the Jefferson District tournament, which gets underway on Friday.
William Monroe and Monticello battled closely through three quarters, but the Dragons had more left at the end, topping the Mustangs, 84-70. Fluvanna knocked off Louisa in the other Jefferson District game of the night, winning 69-60.
Saint Anne's Belfield got 28 points from Brett Goodloe, as the Saints topped Highland, 84-62. The Saints improve to 17-3 on the season and travel to Blue Ridge on Thursday.
Albemarle closed out its Commonwealth District schedule with a win on Tuesday, outlasting Riverbend, 61-59. Andre Roberts had 16 points, while Adam Utz added 14 in the victory.
On the girls side, William Monroe locked up a Jefferson District regular season title by beating Monticello, 59-36. The Dragons used a strong second half to slam the door on the Mustangs. Melanie Lamb paced William Monroe with 16 points and Talia Towles added 14 in the win.
Fluvanna used the duo of K-anna and Mia Loyd to knock off Louisa,m 65-48. K-anna Loyd posted a big double-double of 19 points and 13 rebounds, while Mia chipped in 13 points and seven boards. Western Albemarle won the other Jefferson District match up of the evening, topping Orange, 48-42.
Charlottesville welcomed Harrisonburg for a non-district showdown, but could not handle the Blue Streaks, falling 55-48. Shawntae Payne scored 27 for the Knights in the losing cause.
STAB cruised to a win against Highland Tuesday afternoon, winning 66-44. Sarah Imovbioh got it done on both sides of the ball, scoring 18 points and pulling down 19 rebounds. Chantel Baker pitched in 16 points to help the Saints to the win.
Covenant had no trouble with St. Margaret's on Tuesday, winning 41-18.
