The Region II Tournament began on Tuesday night with eight local teams having the chance to advance to the semifinals. The Charlottesville boys and girls are the top seeds in the Division Four brackets, but six area squads tipped off in hopes of staying alive.
On the boys side, Western Albemarle and William Monroe tipped off on the Warriors home court. It marked the fourth time the two teams met this season, and the Dragons would have the last laugh. Desmon Shaver's put-back as time expired capped a close game, giving William Monroe the 53-51 victory. With Western trailing by three, Travis Washington was fouled on a three point attempt, and hit all three free throws to tie the game at 51 with 14 seconds to go, but the Dragons drove down, got two offensive rebound, and saw Shaver finish. William Monroe will travel to Dominion on Thursday for semifinal action.
Orange got 23 points from D.J. Brown, and got by Potomac Falls in Division Four Region II action, winning 75-66. The Hornets will advance to face Broad Run in the semifinals on Thursday.
On the girls side, William Monroe and Fluvanna met in the Region II Division 3 bracket. The Dragons got eleven points from Leah Krynitski to lead them to a 48-41 win. William Monroe will tip off with Freedom in semifinal action Thursday night.
