After Dave Leitao's resignation Monday, the Cavaliers immediately began a national search for a new men's basketball coach. Craig Littlepage has a tough job ahead of him. “We expect to attract a strong pool of candidates interested in becoming a part of our University community,” said Littlepage. Many of the coaches on the Cavaliers' preliminary list appear to be in the midst of the postseason.
Tubby Smith is currently the head coach at Minnesota, incidentally where Ralph Sampson's son currently plays. Smith has been linked to the open Cavalier job in several reports, but he has also been linked to open jobs at Alabama and Georgia as well. The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports that it is "highly highly highly unlikely" that Smith would leave Minnesota for the Virginia job.
Jeff Capel is the head coach at Oklahoma and has pointed the Sooners in the right direction. Capel is familiar with Virginia, as he is the former head coach at Virginia Commonwealth. Capel is a possible National Coach of the Year candidate this season. He also is reportedly a target for the Georgia job as well.
VCU's Anthony Grant and Xavier's Sean Miller are also popping up in reports. Stay tuned to CBS19, ABC16, WAHU FOX27, and www.wcav.tv for all the latest developments.
