Tubby Smith will remain at Minnesota and has no intention of leaving for the Virginia job, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Smith told the university president that he will remain at the school, despite reports that had him interested in the open Virginia job.
Smith was rumored to be the top candidate for the vacant Cavalier head coaching position, after Dave Leitao resigned last Monday. Smith put to rest those rumors, saying that the program is doing well, but there is still a lot of work to do. "I plan on being here for a very long time," he said.
Another candidate on Virginia's list is also getting interest from other programs. Virginia Commonwealth has granted Alabama permission to talk to head coach Anthony Grant. Grant is also reportedly on the Cavaliers' wish list.
We will keep a close eye on Virginia's coaching search, and bring you more details as they become available.
