It wasn't your typical senior day opponent. The undefeated Northwestern Wildcats stormed into Klockner Stadium on Saturday with an unblemished 13-0 record. Nine Cavalier seniors were recognized prior to game time, and two of them made immediate impacts early on. Blair Weymouth had three goals, and Whitaker Hagerman netted two in the first half alone. Tied at six with just four seconds to go in the first half, the Wildcats took the lead and a 7-to-6 advantage at the break.
In the second half, things got interesting. Both teams traded goals, and even when Northwestern took a two goal lead, it quickly evaporated and Virginia tied it up at ten. After a Hannah Nielsen goal with under 1:30 to go in regulation, the Cavaliers regained possession. After a penalty set up the Cavaliers with a free position chance, it was quickly negated as the referee signaled that Ashley McCollough moved prior to the whistle ending Virginia's chance at a tie.
Virginia is back in action on Thursday as they open up the ACC tournament at Virginia Tech.
