When you think of a bicycle in sports, you probably think of the Tour de France and Lance Armstrong, or perhaps some extreme sports with BMX biking. One area group is offering a different way to use your bike when it comes to the sports world.
It's called Bike Polo, and while regular polo is played with horses on grass, this is played with your bicycle on asphalt. Players are divided into teams and try score goals.
Charlottesville Bike Polo plays at the McIntire Skate Park. Barry Matthews is the moderator for the club and says that he has seen it played in placed like Richmond and Washington, DC. He decided to start up Charlottesville Bike Polo and the group gets a pretty good turnout. Matthews also says that the sport has been around for about 100 years.
Anybody who wants to play bike polo can visit the McIntire Skate Park every Sunday at 12:30pm. All you need to do is bring your bike. Click on the above video link to view Jed Gamber's report on Charlottesville Bike Polo, and hear from Matthews and some players.
Do you know of another unusual sport we should cover? We welcome your comments.
