After such a long time off, Virginia lacrosse showed no signs of rust in the opening round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament. Virginia scored nine goals in the first period of play dictating the tempo of the game, and cruised from there.
The Cavs took a 15-0 lead into the half, and did all but seal a victory after the break. Coach Dom Starsia had the luxury to sit most of his starters late in the game and still managed to score three more goals in the third period. Nova did show signs of life int he fourth quarter but it was far too late. The Cavs ended Villanova's season with a 18-6 victory.
Brian Carroll led all scorers with five goals on the day, right behind him was Danny Glading with four. Steele Stanwick and John Haldy also chipped in with three goals a piece.
Virginia will now advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. They will take on Johns Hopkins, a team they have already defeated earlier this season, at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium in Annapolis, MD. next weekend.
