The Cavalier baseball team departed on Tuesday evening for Irvine, California, where Virginia will take the field Friday to open up NCAA Regional play. The second seeded Cavaliers will face third seeded San Diego State to open things up and will look to overcome quite a challenge on the mound.

That challenge is star pitcher Stephen Strasburg, who is scheduled to start Friday's opener for the Aztecs. Strasburg's credentials speak for themselves. He boasts a 13-0 record this season to go along with a 1.24 earned run average. Strasburg has struck out 180 batters in 102 innings, and is expected to be the number one pick in next month's Major League Baseball Amateur Draft.

San Diego State is 40-21 on the year and fell to Utah in the Mountain West Conference championship game. The Aztecs finished 15-9 in conference play, good enough for fourth in the regular season. They are coached by Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn.

Virginia and San Diego State get underway at 7:00pm eastern time on Friday. UC-Irvine and Fresno State meet in the second game of the day at 11:00pm.
