In their first ever Super Regional appearance, the Virginia Cavaliers fell victim to a walk off home run by Rebels' first basemen Matt Smith in the bottom of the 12th inning.

The crowd of close to ten thousand in Oxford witnessed two strong pitching performances by Virginia's Danny Hultzen and Ole Miss' Phillip Irwin. Hultzen went 5 1/3 innings giving up 1 earned run on 4 hits and 5 strikeouts while Irwin went 7 innings giving up 3 earned runs on 9 hits.

The Cavaliers got on the board first in the top half of the second inning when Franco Valdes ripped a RBI double to right to score Stephen Proscia. The Rebels came right back in the bottom of the 4th to tie it up with a RBI single from Kevin Mort. But, in the top of the 5th inning, Virginia used back to back hits from Jarret Parker and Phil Gosselin to take a 3-1 lead.

In the bottom of the 6th, the Rebels cut the Virginia lead to 3-2 with a RBI double by Jeremy Travis. Virginia's Tyler Wilson came on in relief of Danny Hultzen and kept the Rebels off the board until the bottom of the 9th inning when Logan Power hit a one out single off Virginia closer Kevin Arico to force extra innings.

The score would stay knotted until the bottom of the 12th when Matt Smith hit the first pitch he saw into the left field bleachers to give the Rebels game one of the best of three series.

Virginia tries to even the series tomorrow and force a third game when Robert Morey takes the mound for the Cavaliers at noon.
