Virginia Prepares for College World Series

June 9, 2009

The Virginia baseball team leaves for Omaha, NE Wednesday in preparation for its Saturday matchup with LSU in the College World Series.

This is Virginia's first ever trip to the College World Series. LSU is making its 15th appearance after sweeping Rice in the Baton Rouge Super Regional. The Tigers come in with a record of 51-16, while Virginia is 48-13-1. The 48 wins are the most in program history.

The trip to Omaha will be a homecoming of sorts for Virginia Head Coach Brian O'Connor. O'Connor grew up in Council Bluffs, IA, right outside Omaha. He also played his college baseball at Creighton University in Omaha and got to play in the College World Series with the Blue Jays. He is also featured on the "Road to Omaha" statue outside of Rosenblatt Stadium. O'Connor will also be going up against his mentor and close friend in LSU Head Coach Paul Mainieri on Saturday. O'Connor was an assistant on Mainieri's staff at Notre Dame.

First pitch for Saturday's game is set for 7 pm from Rosenblatt Stadium.
