Here is a look at the Cavaliers opening game versus LSU on Saturday at 7 p.m. on ESPN.
The Louisiana State Tigers are 51-16 on the season and winners of the SEC Conference Championship. They advanced to the College World Series after sweeping the number six national seed Rice Owls.
LSU is led offensively by DJ LeMahieu and Ryan Schimpf. On the season, DJ LeMahieu is batting .340 with a team high 84 hits and Ryan Schimpf leads the Tigers with 19 homeruns and 17 doubles. Eight of the Tiger’s nine starters are batting .300 or above.
The LSU pitching staff is led by starter’s Louis Coleman, Anthony Ranaudo, and Austin Ross. Coleman is 13-2 on the season and leads the team with a 2.76 earned run average. Ranaudo is 10-3 on the season with a 2.95 earned run average and a team high 147 strikeouts. Opponents are hitting a mere .255 against the Tiger’s pitching staff as a whole.
The Tigers had two players selected on the opening day of the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft. Junior outfielder Jared Mitchell was drafted 23rd overall and sophomore infielder DJ LeMahieu was drafted 79th overall.
The Cavaliers and Tigers are joined by Arkansas (39-22) and Cal State Fullerton (47-14) in Bracket A. The winner of Bracket A will face the winner of Bracket B in a best of three championship series beginning on June 22. The opening rounds of the College World Series feature double-elimination play.
