The University of Virginia will not take advantage of an option to extend the contract of head football coach Al Groh by a year.
Groh received a five-year contract last summer. It included a December deadline for the school to decide whether or not to add another year onto the end of the deal.
Groh's team finished 5-7 this year. It failed to qualify for a bowl for the first time in five years. In a statement, Athletic Director Craig Littlepage said, "The expectations for our program are higher than a 5-7 season." He did add, "I believe Coach Groh and his staff have positioned the team for success on the field in 2007 and beyond."
Groh is scheduled to receive about $1.87 million in salary in 2007. He will receive a five percent cost-of-living increase for the remaining four years.
