Coaching Connection: Brian O'Connor and Paul Mainieri

June 12, 2009

Saturday's College World Series game between Virginia and LSU will feature a matchup between two coaches who are not only former colleagues, but also best friends.

Virginia Head Coach Brian O'Connor was an assistant to LSU Head Coach Paul Mainieri at Notre Dame. The two coached together for nine years at Notre Dame (1995-2003), with O'Connor being promoted to associate head coach in 2001. The following year he and Mainieri would help lead Notre Dame to a berth in the College World Series.

The two coaches will meet at home plate Saturday night and both agree that it will be an emotional meeting. O'Connor has announced he will start Freshman LHP Danny Hultzen against the Tigers. Most of the Tigers 16 losses have come against left-handed pitching.
