Back on July 3, King George Post 89 handed Albemarle Post 74 its fourth loss of the season. Since then, Post 74 has been riding a seven game winning streak, including a Williamsburg Tournament title. Monday they looked to get back at the team that gave them their last defeat.
In a contest that went back-and-forth, Albemarle fell to King George, 14-13, but made Post 89 work for it. Down 8-3 in the fourth, Post 74 charged back. The squad scored eight runs in the inning to take an 11-8 lead. However, King George went on a late rally to take the contest, marking their second straight win against Albemarle.
While the major league home run derby was in St. Louis on Monday, one could say that a similar event was taking place at Albemarle High School. Ten total home runs were hit in the contest, including three by Albemarle's Tyler Malinaro. Post 74's Danny Morris also had a multi-homer game, hitting two home runs. Both of them came in Post 74's big fourth inning, one to lead off the inning, while the other capped off the scoring in the frame.
Albemarle falls to 17-5 on the season, and will open up District 12 Tournament play on Thursday night. Post 74 will host an opponent that has yet to be announced. They'll be the top seed in the event.
