With the 2009 football season fast approaching, Cavalier fans are hoping that senior tailback Mikell Simpson can come back healthy and provide a spark to Al Groh's offense.
In 2007, Mikell Simpson burst onto the scene with a breakout performance against Maryland on national television. He continued that with a record breaking Gator Bowl when he ran for 170 yards including a 96-yard touchdown run. That touchdown was the longest in UVa history and the second longest in NCAA bowl history. On the season, he led the Cavaliers with 10 touchdowns and was second on the team with 570 rushing yards.
Simpson's 2008 season was cut short after suffering a shoulder injury in the Miami game. He finished second on the team with 262 rushing yards. His best single game effort came against Maryland when he rushed for 77 yards on 14 carries.
For his career, Simpson has amassed 888 rushing yards and 480 receiving yards.
