With high expectations heading into the 2009 season, Virginia men's soccer took the field in their preseason finale against West Virginia with hopes of a win to enter the regular season on a high note. Unfortunately for the Cavs, the mountaineers had other plans.
In a questionable call early in the first half, the Mountaineers were awarded a penalty kick which Alex Silva took advantage of to give WVU an early 1-0 lead. However, just a few minutes later the Cavaliers looked to respond as Hunter Jumper fired a long shot from the corner which hit the right post leaving the game at 1-0. Before the end of the half, the Mountaineers extended their lead as Gift Maworere headed in another goal, giving WVU a 2-0 lead into the break.
In the second half, both teams had their chances but no one could find the net, leaving the score at 2-0 and ending the Cavaliers preseason with a tough loss.
The Cavaliers take the field in their regular season opener on the road out west in the Nike Portland Invitational on September 4th.
