Former Cavalier Somdev Devvarman won his first round match at the U.S. Open, defeating Frederico Gil of Portugal 6-3, 6-4, 6-3.
It was Devvarman's first appearance in the U.S. Open. Earlier this year the former Cavalier made his grand slam debut at Wimbledon on the doubles side, but lost his first round match. Devvarman now moves on to the second round, where he will meet a player to be determined.
Devvarman was a two-time NCAA champion while at Virginia. His former teammate Michael Shabaz is gearing up to make his U.S. Open debut as well. Shabaz and Wayne Odesnik will team up in the doubles portion against Americans John Isner and Sam Querrey in the first round. Shabaz is believed to be the first current Cavalier to compete in the main draw of the U.S. Open.
