The Virginia men's soccer team shut out Portland 3-0 in its season opener Friday night.
Tony Tchani had two goals for the Cavaliers, who are now 42-21-3 all-time in season openers. Tchani now has four multi-goal games in his career. Virginia had gone 0-3 in the preseason, only scoring one goal in those three games.
Freshman Will Bates had Virginia's other goal in the game, while keeper Diego Restrepo posted his first shutout as a Cavalier. The win also moves head coach George Gelnovatch closer to the 200-win mark for his career. He is now 196-76-22 as a head coach.
The Cavaliers continue play at the Nike Portland Invitational on Sunday against Washington. Kickoff is set 3 pm ET.
