The Virginia men's basketball team is the second seed for the 2007 Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament scheduled March 8-11 at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa, Fla. The Cavaliers finished the regular season tied for first in the ACC standings with North Carolina at 11-5. The Tar Heels defeated Virginia in the only meeting between the two teams this season and North Carolina is the top-seeded team in the tournament.
It's the highest seed for the Cavaliers in the tournament since they were seeded second in 1983. Virginia was also seeded second in 1982 and UVa was the top-seed in the tournament in 1981.
The four top seeds in the tournament - North Carolina, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Boston College - earned byes in the first round and don't play until the quarterfinals on Friday.
The Cavaliers (11-5 ACC, 20-9 overall) will play the winner of a first round game between seventh-seeded Duke (8-8 ACC, 22-9 overall) and 10th-seeded NC State (5-11 ACC, 15-14 overall) in the tournament quarterfinals on Friday (March 9) at 7 p.m. Virginia's quarterfinal game will be televised by Raycom/Lincoln Financial and ESPN2.
There are four first round games in the tournament on Thursday (March 8). Eighth-seeded Clemson (7-9 ACC, 21-9 overall) plays ninth-seeded Florida State (7-9 ACC, 19-11 overall) at noon, fifth-seeded Maryland (10-6 ACC, 24-7 overall) meets 12th-seeded Miami (4-12 ACC, 11-19 overall) at 2:30 p.m., Duke and NC State play at 7 p.m. and sixth-seeded Georgia Tech (8-8 ACC, 20-10 overall) plays 11th-seeded Wake Forest (5-11 ACC, 14-15 overall) at 9:30 p.m.
In the quarterfinals on Friday, top-seeded North Carolina (11-5 ACC, 25-6 overall) meets the winner of the Clemson-Florida State game at noon, fourth-seeded Boston College (10-6 ACC, 19-10 overall) plays the winner of the Maryland-Miami game at 2:30 p.m., Virginia meets the winner of the Duke-NC State game at 7:00 p.m. and third-seeded Virginia Tech (10-6 ACC, 20-10 overall) plays the winner of the Georgia Tech-Wake Forest game at 9:30 p.m.
The tournament's semifinal games are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Saturday (March 10) and the championship game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday (March 11).
