Entering Tuesday's match against Liberty, the Cavaliers boasted a perfect 17-0 record, including a 3-0 rout last year, against their in-state counterparts. And though Virginia held a 29-6 shooting advantage, the Flames worked the Cavs to a 1-1 draw.
Virginia had several legitimate scoring opportunities in the first half. In fact, the Cavs struck the crossbar twice in the first period but failed to put the ball in the back of the net
In the second half, Virginia sophomore forward Brian Ownby struck the post again for the Cavs, but this time, freshman Will Bates slotted a putback into the back of the net. Not to be outdone, Liberty's Darren Amoo scored his team leading 8th goal off of a corner kick less than a minute later to tie the match at one. Neither side mustered any goals in the two overtimes, and the Cavaliers drew for the first time this season.
Virginia next plays in Blacksburg at Virginia Tech this Saturday, October 17.
