The No. 5 Virginia baseball team blanked Miami, 3-0, Saturday in front of 2,326 fans at Davenport Field, ending the Hurricanes' streak of consecutive games without being shutout at 168 games. The streak dated back to May 16, 2004, against North Carolina.

Freshman Matt Packer (Germantown, Tenn.) moved to 3-1 after tossing 5.1 innings and giving up just four hits and two walks while striking out eight.

"That was without a doubt the best game Matt Packer has thrown here," head coach Brian O'Connor said. "He had eight strikeouts and was in complete control. It all starts on the mound and if you get good starting pitching, you have a great chance to win, and we've gotten two great starts from Jacob Thompson and Matt Packer this weekend."

Andrew Carraway (Marietta, Ga.) came on in the sixth inning and then threw 2.2 innings before handing the ball over to Casey Lambert (Harrisonburg, Va.), who retired the side in order in the ninth to earn his sixth save.

Scott Maine (2-4) took the loss for Miami (14-12, 2-6). He fired 5 2/3 innings, giving up three runs (two earned), six hits and two walks while striking out five.

The Cavaliers (22-4, 5-3 ACC) cracked the scoreboard with a run in the fourth inning. Brandon Guyer (Herndon, Va.) led off with a single, advanced to second on an errant pickoff throw and scored on a Patrick Wingfield (Winchester, Va.) single.

Virginia added two runs in the fifth inning on a David Adams (Margate, Fla.) RBI groundout and a run-scoring single by Guyer.

Virginia looks to earn a three-game sweep in the series finale at noon Sunday. Junior left-hander Sean Doolittle (Tabernacle, N.J.) will start for the Cavaliers, while Miami will start junior right-hander Enrique Garcia. The game will be webcast by ACC Select.
