The fifth-ranked Virginia baseball team dropped a 4-2 decision to Miami Sunday at Davenport Field. The Cavaliers took two of three games in the series, but it was the Cavaliers' first home loss in 16 outings this season.
"I don't feel like we played our best baseball today, but Sean Doolitte did," Virginia head coach Brian O'Connor said. "That was the best he has pitched in three or four weeks today. That was great to see. If you want to win this league, you need to take opportunities like we had today against a good team like Miami, and we didn't do that."
Sean Doolittle (Tabernacle, N.J.) started for Virginia and tossed six innings, giving up two runs, two hits and a walk while fanning seven. He dropped to 4-2 in taking the defeat. At the plate, Doolittle homered as part of a 1-for-3 day. Brandon Guyer (Herndon, Va.) added two hits.
Enrique Garcia (2-2) started for Miami and went five innings, allowing one run, four hits and a walk while striking out four. Danny Gil pitched the ninth and earned his second save.
Miami (15-12, 3-6 ACC) jumped ahead in the third inning. With one out, Kevin Diego doubled off the glove of diving center fielder Mike Mitchell. One out later, Blake Tekotte doubled down the left field line to plate Diego and give the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead.
Virginia (22-5, 5-4) answered in the bottom of the third. Mike Mitchell (Chesapeake, Va.) singled to lead off and stole second. He moved to third on a Greg Miclat (Concord, N.C.) groundout and scored when Tim Henry (Fairfield, Conn.) grounded out.
Miami again grabbed the lead in the sixth inning. Tekotte was hit by a pitch to lead off and then stole second. He was sacrificed to third by Jamile Weeks and scored on a sacrifice fly by Yonder Alonso. The Hurricanes tacked on two runs in the eighth inning on an RBI single by Mark Sobolewski and an RBI double from Roger Tomas.
Doolittle homered to right-center field to lead off the eighth inning, his team-best fourth home run of the year.
Virginia continues its homestand at 5 p.m. Tuesday against George Mason.
