The Virginia women's lacrosse team tied a season-high with 18 goals but lost in sudden-victory overtime to Duke, dropping a 19-18 decision to the Blue Devils. Eight different Cavaliers (9-2, 1-2 ACC) notched points on the afternoon, with captain Jess Wasilewski and Brittany Kalkstein each scoring four goals while Blair Weymouth, Megan Havrilla, Ashley McCulloch and Kate Breslin each added four points. Kristen Waagbo scored six goals and added two assists for the No. 5 Blue Devils (9-1. 2-1 ACC. McBrearty made 12 saves for the No. 4 Cavaliers, and Kaitlin Duff caused three turnovers and scooped up four ground balls for Virginia in the loss.

After the teams exchanged goals in a 16-second span to start the scoring in the seventh minute, Virginia used a four-goal run in two minutes to take a 5-1 lead. McCulloch notched two goals and Weymouth added a goal and an assist in that span. Duke's Allie Johnson scored her only goal of the game to stop the run, but Virginia's Megan O'Malley stuck in a loose ball to push the margin back to four. Waagbo scored her second goal of the game to keep the Blue Devils in striking distance, but Virginia used another run to move out to a 9-3 lead, the largest of the game. Duke's Caroline Cryer scored twice in three minutes to cut the deficit to four, but a goal by Kate Breslin in the final 30 seconds of the half gave Virginia a 10-5 halftime lead.

Wasilewskl's first goal of the game came 1:09 into the second period and moved the margin back up to six, but Duke used a 4-0 run in five minutes, with two goals from Leigh Jester, to cut the deficit to two at 11-9. Kalkstein scored off the draw to push Virginia back ahead by three, but another quick run by Duke with three goals in two minutes tied the game at 12 with 18:35 to play.

The Cavaliers answered with a blitz of their own, scoring twice in 19 seconds to take a two-goal lead at 14-12 with 13:15 to play. Duke answered with two goals in 31 seconds to tie the game at 14. Jester's fourth goal of the game, which came at 8:46, gave Duke their first lead of the game at 15-14.

Again Virginia answered with a pair of quick strikes, as Wasilewski scored off a loose ball on the Duke goal circle, followed by a McCulloch goal off a Kate Breslin draw control, to take a 16-15 lead with 6:42 to play.

Waagbo notched her fifth goal on a crease roll to tie the game at 4:44, but a fast break run to perfection by Breslin to Havrilla put the Cavaliers back on top 17-16 with 2:47 to play. Wasilewski won the draw and Virginia was able to settle the attack before Wasilewski drove to the cage, scoring at 1:41 to give the Cavaliers an 18-16 lead. Duke won the draw and scored nine seconds later to cut the deficit to one.

The Cavaliers won the draw but turned the ball over in the attack zone, and Duke quickly cleared the ball upfield where Caroline Cryer assisted on Waagno's sixth goal of the game with 20 seconds to play in regulation to tie the game. Duke won the draw control but the Virginia defense held them off for the final seconds, sending the game into overtime.

The Blue Devils won the opening draw but McBrearty made two saves to keep Duke from the cage. The Cavaliers were able to clear the ball upfield but were not able to score, and the teams switched sides for the second half of overtime. Again McBrearty made a stop to keep the Cavaliers in the game, but Virginia was not able to get off a shot at the other end of the field and the teams moved into a sudden-victory period.

The Cavaliers won the draw and Virginia was able to get off a shot, but it was wide. The Cavaliers retained possession but Duke's Christina Germinario caused a turnover and the Blue Devils cleared the ball quickly before Waagbo fed Rachel Sanford, who notched her third goal of the game to give Duke the upset.

The 18 goals is the most goals Virginia has ever scored in a loss, and the 19 goals is the most the Cavaliers have surrendered since a 23-8 loss to No. 1 Penn State in 1986.

Virginia returns to action on Wednesday, April 4 against Old Dominion. Game time against the Lady Monarchs is 3 pm in Norfolk.
