No. 3 Virginia Baseball Falls 5-2 at VMI

Video will be available shortly.

LEXINGTON, Va. - VMI scored four runs in the sixth inning and parlayed it into a 5-2 win over the third-ranked Virginia baseball team Wednesday night in front of 1,265 fans at Gray-Minor Stadium.

VMI starting pitcher Chris Henderson (3-1) stifled the Cavaliers' offense, allowing just two runs and five hits over 7 2/3 innings. He struck out seven and retired 15-consecutive batters from the third to eighth innings. Corey Bachman tossed the final 1 1/3 innings to pick up his second save.

Jake Rule (Waynesboro, Va.) took the loss for Virginia to fall to 2-2 on the year. He allowed four runs (two earned) and two hits and got one out in the sixth inning. Jeff Lorick (Duluth, Ga.) had a strong starting pitching performance for Virginia, going five innings while surrendering just an earned run, three hits and a walk with four strikeouts.

Brandon Guyer (Herndon, Va.) homered and went 2-for-4 for Virginia. Brandon Marsh (Alpharetta, Ga.) also went 2-for-4 for the Cavaliers.

VMI (22-8) opened the scoring with a run in the first inning on an RBI single to left field by A.J. Yoder, but Virginia wasted no time in rallying, as Guyer led off the second with a towering home run to left-center field.

The Keydets broke the tie with a four-run sixth inning. With one out, Robert Crumpler doubled. Eddie Van Es then reached on a third strike when Rule uncorked a wild pitch, which also moved Crumpler to third. Crumpler came home when Rule made an errant throw to second after a grounder to the mound. Michael Roberts and Jacoby Fields were both hit by pitches, which forced in another run to push the lead to 3-1. Virginia brought in Michael Schwimer (Alexandria, Va.), and he gave up an RBI single to Brian Sandridge before retiring Jordan Ballard on a sacrifice fly to center which gave VMI a 5-1 lead.

The Cavaliers (27-6) got a run back in the eighth inning to knock Henderson from the game. With two outs, Tyler Cannon (Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) singled and then moved up on a wild pitch. He scored on a Brandon Marsh (Alpharetta, Ga.) single.

Virginia returns to ACC play this weekend, playing host to Duke at Davenport Field. The first game begins at 7 p.m. Friday.
