The Cavalier field hockey team received some good news on Tuesday night, discovering that it has earned the number two overall seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament. Virginia will host first and second round action at the University Hall Turf Field. It marks the second time in program history that Virginia will host an NCAA regional.
The Cavaliers will open things up with Richmond on Saturday morning at 11:30. The Spiders are coming off a win over Ohio in a play-in game and are the Atlantic-10 champions. Virginia and Richmond met in the regular season on the Spiders' home field with the Cavaliers earning the 4-3 victory. This marks the first time these in-state foes will meet in the NCAA Tournament.
The second match up in Charlottesville will be between Michigan State and Delaware. The Spartans won the Big Ten, while Delaware took home the CAA title. The winners of both first round match ups will clash on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 for the right to move on to the Sweet 16.
Virginia is 18-3 on the year and is one win away from tying the school record for wins in a season. The Cavaliers advanced to the ACC Championship game this past weekend where they fell to top ranked Maryland, 3-2, in overtime. It marks Virginia's fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.
