Jameel Sewell passed for 221 yards and Virginia gained 298 yards of total offense, but it was not enough, as the Cavalier football team fell to Boston College, 14-10, on Saturday. The loss drops Virginia's record to 3-7, 2-4 in ACC play.
Ras-I Dowling got things going in a big way by picking off Boston College quarterback Dave Shinskie in the endzone on the Eagles' opening drive, but Virginia could not capitalize. Robert Randolph missed a 47 yard field goal attempt in the first quarter and the Eagles got a Shinskie ten yard touchdown pass to account for the only score in the first half.
The second half saw the Cavaliers pull even. Chris Cook picked off a Shinskie pass in the third quarter and returned it 58 yards for the game-tying touchdown. Randolph would add a field goal as time expired in the third, giving Virginia the 10-7 lead heading into the fourth.
Boston College put together another scoring drive in the final frame, as Shinskie's quarterback sneak on fourth down and inches from the goal-line was ruled a touchdown. With the score 14-10, Virginia got the ball back with 2:12 remaining and put together a drive that saw them on the Boston College 12 yard line with 17 seconds to play. On fourth and one, Sewell took the snap, looked for an open receiver, then tucked the ball and ran for the first down. The play resulted in a measurement which showed Sewell had come inches short, giving the ball back to the Eagles and ending the Cavaliers' hopes of the win.
In addition to Sewell's effort, Rashawn Jackson rushed for 61 yards in the loss, while Steve Greer led the team with ten tackles. Virginia will travel to Clemson on Saturday for its final road game of the season. Kickoff time will be announced on Sunday.
