The Cavalier women's basketball team will face its toughest test of the young season on Sunday afternoon when sixth ranked Tennessee visits John Paul Jones Arena. Virginia enters with a number 12 national ranking, setting up a highly anticipated battle on the hardwood.
Virginia comes into this match up with a 3-0 mark and coming off a 110-63 win over USC Upstate on Wednesday night. Chelsea Shine scored a career high 27 points and pulled down eleven rebounds to fuel the victory, while Monica Wright and Simone Egwu each chipped in 19 points.
Tennessee enters this match up 2-0 with wins over Baylor and Texas Tech. Seven Volunteers are averaging double figures in scoring as they enter Charlottesville. Tennessee not only hopes to stay perfect on its season, but also hopes to avenge last year's loss to Virginia. Last season the Cavaliers went into Knoxville and upset the fifth ranked Volunteers, 83-82, led by a career high 35 points from Monica Wright.
Sunday afternoon will mark Hot Dog Day. Fans in attendance will receive a free hot dog and fountain drink in hopes of getting more fans at the game. Virginia hopes to set an all-time attendance record for women's basketball. The current mark is 11,174 and was set back in 1986 on the original Hot Dog Night against North Carolina.
This game was originally slated to begin at 2:00 pm, but the start time has been shifted to 4:00 pm to help accommodate fans, traffic and parking for the Virginia men's soccer NCAA Tournament game. That match will get underway at 1:00 pm, and UVa hopes the fans will attend both games.
