For the past eight years, Richmond International Raceway has held both of its races when the sun goes down and the lights come on. Saturday night racing has made RIR one of the most exciting venues in the sport.
Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other intentions and pushed the Jim Stewart 400 to tomorrow afternoon.
Before the race began, Virginia natives Elliot Sadler, Jeff Burton, Ward Burton and Denny Hamlin made a big announcement. They donated $120,000 to the Hokie Memorial Fund. Richmond native Hamlin is currently fifth in the Nextel standings.
The race began under a green/yellow flag as jet dryers finished drying the track.
Jeff Gordon, the pole sitter, had the lead. He's been the hottest driver this season with seven top-five finishes in nine races, but he'll have to wait and see if he'll extend his Nextel Cup lead. After 12 laps under caution, the rain came down on RIR and the red flag was brought out. The race pushed to start at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Because they didn't get a green flag lap in, the race will start from scratch.
