Cavaliers Drop 11-7 Decision to Coastal Carolina

Video will be available shortly.

Coastal Carolina racked up 20 hits, an opponent record at six-year-old Davenport Field. Virginia finished with 14 hits but was unable to dig itself out of an early 6-0 hole. David Adams (Margate, Fla.) and Sean Doolittle (Tabernacle, N.J.) each had three hits for the Cavaliers.

David Anderson (5-3) was a two-way star for Coastal Carolina. He went 4-for-6 at the plate and threw five solid innings, allowing three earned runs, six hits and a walk while striking out six. David Sappelt and Derek Martin added two hits apiece.

Jeff Lorick (Duluth, Ga.) took the loss for Virginia and dropped to 2-1 this season. He struggled out of the gate, allowing five earned runs and five hits in 2/3 of an inning.

Coastal Carolina (42-10) batted around in the first inning, scoring five times to take a commanding early lead. Baldridge had a two-run triple to highlight the big inning.

The Chanticleers added a run in the second on a Baldridge single, but Virginia (39-13) answered in the bottom of the second on an Adams solo home run to left field. It was his fourth home run of the season.

Coastal Carolina added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to push its lead to 8-1 before the Cavaliers scored three in the sixth inning on an Adams fielder's choice, a Jeremy Farrell (Westlake, Ohio) single and a Patrick Wingfield (Winchester, Va.) groundout.

Coastal came back with two runs in the seventh inning on a single by Adam Vrable and a groundout by Sappelt.

After Virginia cut the lead to 10-5 in the eighth on an Adams single, Coastal Carolina came back with a run of its own in the top of the ninth on a Baldridge sacrifice fly. Virginia scored twice in the bottom of the ninth on a double by Doolittle to provide the final margin of 11-7.

Virginia finishes regular-season play with a three-game ACC series at Boston College. The series kicks off at 2:30 p.m. Thursday. The teams also will play at 1 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
