A full slate of high school basketball action tipped off on Friday and several area teams were able to pick up wins.
Charlottesville fell to Madison in its opener, but was able to rebound tonight in its Jefferson District opener. The Black Knights jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a 55-34 victory over Monticello.
Western Albemarle battled Nelson in the Warriors' tip off tournament and came from behind for the 58-48 win. Covenant fell to Fort Defiance by a 70-63 score in the other game of the event. The Western Tip Off Tournament has been postponed for Saturday due to the threat of snow.
The Miller School took on Woodberry Forest in private school action. Mychel Parker led the Mavericks to the 67-50 win over Woodberry as they get a win in their season opener.
Fluvanna got 26 points from Ya Ya Anderson to power the Flucos past Goochland, 67-63. Elsewhere, Madison topped William Monroe, 75-35, and Orange got by Louisa, 68-60.
Charlottesville and Monticello met on the girls side as well, with the Mustangs handing the Knights a rare district loss. Monticello topped their district rivals, 28-20, in a low scoring affair.
