On January 11, Monica Wright became the all-time scoring leader at Virginia, but the shot she remembers the most from that night is the one that did not fall. Wright's last second game winning attempt was off the mark and Maryland celebrated a 61-60 over the Cavaliers at John Paul Jones Arena. Monday night saw Wright and the Cavs get some revenge.
The senior guard scored 34 points to lead Virginia to the 82-68 win over Maryland at the Comcast Center on Monday. It marks the Cavaliers' first win in College Park since 2003. Wright's 34 point effort saw her move into fourth on the all-time ACC scoring list. She now has 2,327 points for her career.
As for the game itself, Virginia jumped out to a ten point lead in the first half, but a Maryland run saw the Terrapins lead at halftime, 35-32. Debbie Ryan's halftime adjustments worked as the second half belonged to the Cavaliers. Wright scored the first 12 Virginia points of the half as the Cavaliers pulled away for the 14 point victory. They improve to 17-6 on the season, 6-3 in the ACC. In addition to Wright's big night, Chelsea Shine and Ariana Moorer each scored ten points.
Virginia continues its road trip on Thursday as the Cavaliers travel to Miami to face the Hurricanes. Tip off is set for 7:00. Click on the above video link to view highlights from Monday's contest.
