Albemarle Seniors Named Student Athletes of the Year

Each week during the school year, Burger King and the Newsplex honor a high school senior that excels in athletics and academics. This week, Albemarle seniors Matt Lockman and Allison Huschke were honored as the Student Athletes of the Year.

Lockman was the Student Athlete of the Week on Feb. 7. He finished his high school career with a second place finish at states in the 100 free, and a third place finish in the 50 free.

The Patriots swimmer is now UVa bound, where he will swim for the Wahoos. Lockman maintained a 4.55 GPA at Albemarle and plans to study engineering at Virginia.

The other male finalists for the award were Daniel Poehailos of Monticello and Orange County's Alex Montes de Oca. Lockman said it was an honor to receive the award, especially considering the student athletes who were also finalists.

"Everybody is really smart and they work hard. I was shocked, I mean I knew of both the other people and I knew Alex, who was also another finalist, and they're both really dedicated to the sport, and really dedicated in the classroom, so it's cool to think that people think that I deserve to win."

Albemarle swimming coach Jake Shrum, who also swam at UVa, said he knew that Lockman was a good student, but was surprised by just how involved he was when it came time to nominate student athletes.

"The list of honors societies Matt was in was pretty absurd, like four or five. We definitely didn't have that many when I was in high school, at least not ones that I was in. So I mean, he's a very smart and intelligent person, and definitely very deserving of the award."

Huschke was the Student Athlete of the Week on Nov. 8. She maintained a 4.3 GPA during her time as a Patriot, and is committed to running track and cross country at JMU next year.

As a senior at Albemarle, Huschke won the 3200m at the state indoor track championship. She also earned a ninth place finish at the state cross-country championship. In her junior and senior seasons, she won back-to-back Ragged Mountain Cup titles.

"In my forty years, there's only one girl that can come close to Allison as being the toughest distance runner," said Albemarle indoor track coach Buz Male. "There is no one who's more humble and a better sport than Allison, so this award is well deserved."

"It means a lot, I mean anyone could have gotten it," Huschke said of her Student Athlete of the Year honor. "It's nice to be recognized I guess because I mean running and swimming, it's pretty much your life. You have to eat right and sleep right, and there's a lot of practice put into it."

The other female finalists were Monticello's Samantha Yarbrough and Lauren Field from William Monroe.
