A total of 38 players were taken in Thursday's Major League Soccer SuperDraft -- but Virginia forward Will Bates was not among them.
Bates was expected to be selected in the two-round draft, after he was among the college seniors invited to the MLS pre-draft scouting combine earlier this month. Bates was a two-time All-ACC selection at Virginia, including in 2012, when he finished second in the league with 12 goals, and third with 25 total points.
Bates leaves Virginia ranked seventh all-time with 46 goals, and his 102 total points are ninth in school history.
Five players from ACC schools were taken in Thursday's SuperDraft -- all in the first round -- led by midfielder Kyle Bekker of Boston College, who was selected by Toronto FC with the third overall pick.
Louisville defender Andrew Farrell was tean first overall by the New England Revolution.
