Area high school swimmers took center stage at the UVa Aquatic and Fitness Center on Wednesday night. Instead of the former City/County Meet, however, teams took the pool in the first ever Ben Hair Memorial Swim and Dive Meet.
The event is named in memory of former Albemarle swimmer Ben Hair, who was killed in a car accident on December 13, 2009. Instead of just the seven county schools, ten area teams took the pool for the first event, which is replacing the former City/County Meet, to honor their former companion. Hair was a 2006 honors graduate of Albemarle High School and received a posthumous degree from Virginia Tech.
Fittingly, Hair's former team, Albemarle, won the boys event, with Orange coming in second and Charlottesville finishing third. Girls action saw Western Albemarle take the crown, followed by Albemarle and Charlottesville.
