Bird Named Third-Team All-American

Virginia junior midfielder Eric Bird has been named a 2013 Third-Team All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, announced Friday.

Bird is the first Cavalier to earn a spot on the NSCAA All-America Team since Tony Tchani earned first-team honors in 2009.

Also named second-team All-ACC, Bird leads the Cavaliers with seven goals and 19 points this year. He also is tied for the team lead with five assists.

The team captain has played in all 23 games, making 22 straight starts at the attacking midfielder position. He ranks seventh in the ACC in goals and points and ninth in assists.

Bird also was named to the ACC All-Tournament Team this year. He owns a goal and two assists in NCAA tournament, with assists on the game-winning goals against St. John’s and Marquette.
