The rain forced Charlottesville to start its first day of preseason camp indoors, but even Mother Nature couldn't put a damper on the Black Knights' optimism.
Eric Sherry is in his third season as head coach at CHS and says today is a day coaches look forward to every season.
"First day is always a good day. I think anyone in the state of Virginia or the United States, the first day is always a time where you have a lot of prosperity and you got a lot of things you think you can do," Sherry explained. "It's a big deal to me because I can finally get them all in the same room and talk to them."
CHS has reason to be optimistic: the Black Knights made it to the postseason for the first time in over a decade last year and are using today as a springboard to continuing that momentum.
"It's very exciting because we're just trying to hit the ground running and keep going with the success we've had," senior Wade Kammauf said. "We're meeting all the younger kids that haven't been here before and some new kids that transferred in. It's exciting to meet everyone and start building that team unity."
And that team building, according to Sherry, starts right away.
"We're hitting it running. This is year three and we kind of earmarked this year. We think we kind of got in a little early last year at the end of year two but we're hitting it running with a lot of expectations to do some great things."
"it's very important to start building the team unity and show the younger kids the culture that we've built of working hard and trying to get to the next level," Kammauf added.
