Commonwealth Games Field Hockey Wraps Up Play

Some of Virginia's best in field hockey were in Charlottesville this weekend for the Commonwealth Games.

The U16 Tournament was held Saturday on the Turf Field at UVa, with the U19 Tournament Sunday. Both Blue Ridge squads featured many local standouts, including the U16's Kendall Ballard of Charlottesville, the reigning Region II Player of the Year. Her Black Knights coach, Lindsay Larson, is also the head coach for the Blue Ridge teams.

Blue Ridge U16 got off to a shaky start in pool play, falling to the Rappahannock team in the opener, before topping the team from the Coastal region.

They then defeated Piedmont in cross-over play to clinch a spot in the bronze medal game, where the teams would meet again in a rematch.

This time Piedmont got the best of them, winning 2-1 to claim the bronze medal. Potomac topped Rappahannock in the gold medal game.

In the U19 Tournament, Blue Ridge and Piedmont met again in the bronze medal game. Blue Ridge trailed by one before Monticello's Kat Deane tied the game with a backhand goal.

With the game tied 1-1 after regulation, the teams went into a shootout, where just like Saturday, Piedmont again took home the bronze with a 3-2 edge in the extra frame.
