Brown Confident Entering First NFL Training Camp

Former Monticello football star Mike Brown turned a rookie try-out with the Jacksonville Jaguars into an NFL contract back in May. Now Brown is hoping to keep his NFL dream alive in his first training camp with the Jaguars, which begins next week in Florida.

"My goal now is just make myself the best football player that I can do," Brown said Wednesday. "That's the only thing that I can control, and everything else, it's not up to me. So I'm just controlling the things that I can control."

Brown was on the turf at Monticello on Wednesday, working with some current Mustangs. He leaves Sunday for Jacksonville, and the Jaguars open camp on Friday, July 27.

Brown was originally one of 27 undrafted players invited by the Jaguars to audition at a rookie mini-camp in May. The team signed Brown to a three-year contract after a strong performance in that camp.

"I'm a lot more comfortable now," Brown said. "It's still kind of the same mindset, though, that I'm taking into each day, where they can let you go at any time. But knowing that the coaches like something that they see in me is always in the back of my mind, and I've just got to go down there and be myself and continue to perform."

Brown was voted All-Jefferson District as a defensive back (first team), quarterback (second team), and punt returner (second team) as a high school senior at Monticello in 2006.

After redshirting as a true freshman at Liberty University in 2007, he played two seasons at wide receiver. In 2009, he became the first sophomore ever named Big South Offensive Player of the Year, after racking up 60 receptions, 1,417 all-purpose yards, and nine rushing touchdowns.

Brown moved to quarterback for his final two seasons with the Flames. As a senior in 2011, he threw for 2,664 yards and 18 touchdowns, and also ran for 437 yards and nine scores.

The Jaguars moved the 5-10 Brown to slot receiver in May. He's one of 10 receivers on Jacksonville's 90-man roster entering training camp.

"I'm pretty confident," Brown said. "I know that I've come a long ways, but I still have a long ways to go. I'm just staying hungry, staying humble, and just continue to work my tail off."
